Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester City result highlights Guard from seestyle's blog

Pep Guardiola's Manchester City survived fierce pre sure from Atletico Madrid to book their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League and a showdown with Real Madrid.

City went through 1-0 on aggregate after playing out a goalle s draw at the Wanda Metropolitano against the La Liga champions.

Atletico pushed City hard in the second half and pegged the Premier League leaders back near their own box for much of proceedings.

Antoine Griezmann went agonisingly close with a snapshot from the edge of the area and in the final seconds substitute Angel Correa had a shot from close range parried away by Ederson.

But as the tension in the stadium built, some Atletico players lost their heads. Felipe was sent off for two bookings in the closing minutes, while former City player Stefan Savic was fortunate to avoid a red too after instigating a melee after Felipe's Trevor Hoffman Jersey second caution for felling Phil Foden.

BT Sport in the UK reported Savic then clashed with unused City substitute Jack Grealish in the tunnel post-match, having been caught on camera pulling the England man's hair in response to an insult.

It was not all good news for City though, as both Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker went off with injuries.

A big night in Madrid!

This was a different side to City than the Premier League is used to seeing.

Normally, it is City attacking at will, keeping the ball at their leisure and dictating terms. This Franmil Reyes Jersey was not like that at all.

They dealt well with Atletico in the first half, keeping them at arm's length and having the best chance of the opening 45 minutes as Ilkay Gundogan hit the post from close range.

But Diego Simeone fired up his side at half-time and Atleti were terrific in the second half, able to win the ball regularly with a hard pre sing game to which City did not have any answer.

It became more and more a rearguard action and John Stones demonstrated the tenacity of City's defence with a superb block to divert a goalbound effort from Matheus Cunha in the closing stages.

For all their second-half po se sion it took Atletico 100 minutes to finally test Ederson as Angel Correa's shot was parried away from close range deep in stoppage time.

City seemed caught in a situation of not being sure what to do. Attack and try to get that second goal in the tie or sit back and risk Atletico taking control. The latter happened but they got away with it in the end.

It is a shame that the melee and chaos in the final stages will be what this quarter-final second leg is probably remembered for. Atletico did a great job on the pitch and made one of the tournament favourites endure a nervous 90 minutes.

They had built up real momentum in the second half and it should have been a barnstorming end to proceedings.

Instead, City were given a lift as Atletico lost the plot. Felipe got Christian Villanueva Jersey himself needle sly sent off and team-mate Savic really should have gone, too.

Felipe was perhaps fortunate to be on the pitch at that stage as he'd escaped sanction for a late challenge on Foden in the first half that had left the England man with a cut to his head that required heavy bandaging.

He was later cautioned for fouling De Bruyne but then did see red in the 89th minute as, after winning the ball in a tackle on Foden, he left his foot in on the follow-through and caught the City man.

Savic then added fuel to an already volatile situation by trying to drag Foden to his feet and off the pitch, and in the resulting confrontation, he appeared to butt his head into Raheem Sterling's.

If Atletico had stayed cool, Aaron Loup Jersey they could have kept City under the cosh until the dying seconds. As it was, they wasted their good work and took away from a superb tactical effort from Simeone.

UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) De Bruyne and Walker injury worries for Guardiola and City

It was not all good news for City as they looked to have picked up some injuries from the game.

Guardiola said post-match it was too early to know the severity of the i sues for De Bruyne and Walker, but with their FA Cup semi-final with Liverpool coming up on Saturday, both have to be considered doubts.

De Bruyne was substituted early in the second half for Sterling and he immediately had attention on his right ankle from City's medical staff.

Walker's problem was more visible. He came off worse in a challenge with Renan Lodi and, after trying to play on, limped off.
