As prominent WoW creator Asmongold recently WOW WOTLK Classic Gold stated in a post shortly after the announcements from Blizzard: "I'm disappointed because I thought this wouldn't happen...I wasn't expecting them to go through a complete 180. I didn't expect them to move from no microtransactions any point in the game in the first place, to literally selling you mounts and boosts in the game, overnight."
The news comes in the midst of the latest report on earnings from Activision-Blizzard revealed that Blizzard's active monthly players has dramatically diminished compared with the same time last year. Despite having fewer players, revenues for Blizzard was up 7% year-over-year, in part thanks to players "participation in value added activities," i.e. microtransactions.
The announcement of the Burning Crusade Classic's date of release should have been a cause to be a cause for celebration and excitement within the gaming community, however, the news that was released has some gamers worried about what changes and microtransactions Blizzard will add next.
World of Warcraft Rogue Breakdown and Open World Features Despite the decline in player numbers Blizzard's financial results were robust. Revenue increased by 7% year-over-year, thanks primarily to World of Warcraft and specifically WoW's Shadowlands expansion.
" World of Warcraft saw significant engagement, reach, and participation in value-added services, along with the highest number of players who joined to the game for the very first time, which was boosted by efforts to improve the experience for new players," Activision Blizzard said.
Activision Blizzard defines monthly active users as the amount of people who played an individual game during a certain month. This number is calculated using the sum of number of monthly active users in each of the months within a time period then dividing it by 3.
"For Blizzard, an individual who accesses the same game on two devices or platforms in the appropriate time frame will generally be counted as one user." Activision Blizzard said.
This differs for Activision and King. Because of "technical limitations," a player who plays the identical game on two different devices or buy WOTLK Gold platforms can be counted as having two users. Activision Blizzard also cautioned that certain data it collects comes from third-parties.
