Leaks in the Miele refrigerator from Rick's blog

These are the different most common reasons why your Miele refrigerator is leaking water and how you can fix them.

1. Check the drain pan

The drain pan is located at the bottom of the refrigerator and collects melt water after each defrost cycle. The pan may be the cause of the leak if it is overflowing, cracked, or not installed properly.

Open the rear access panel of the refrigerator and inspect the drain pan. If it overflows, take it out and empty it. However, tray overflow may be an indication of a more serious problem. Therefore, we advise you to consult a service technician regarding this - appliance repair toronto service.

If the crankcase is cracked, it must be replaced. Lastly, if the crankcase has been recently removed and reinstalled, chances are it was not done correctly. Remove the crankcase and reinstall it, this time make sure to install it correctly.

2. Unclog the defrost drain

The defrost drain carries the melted water during defrosting to the drain pan. The drain can become clogged with food particles, ice, and other debris. It is necessary to unclog the drain to solve this problem.

To unclog the drain, locate the drain hole inside the refrigerator. If the hole is not visible, we recommend that you call a service technician for this repair.

Insert a plumbing snake into the drain hole and remove the clog. Then, pour hot water down the drain. This will help clear the drain of more particles, and if the clog is caused by ice, melt it.

You can also defrost the refrigerator to make sure the ice in the drain is completely thawed.

3. Flush the water system

If the leak is coming from the water dispenser, then it may be due to air trapped in the water line. Air can become trapped in the water line when changing the water filter and cause the water line to overflow. To resolve this, the water system has to be flushed; Fortunately, this can be done in these simple steps:

  1. Place a bucket or bowl under the dispenser
  2. Press and hold the water dispenser trigger for about 5 seconds and then release it. Do this with an interval of 5 seconds.
  3. Stop when you have dispensed about 3 gallons of water.

To prevent this from happening again, be sure to flush the water system after each filter change.

4. Check water connections

Water connections may not be securely secured. To fix this, use your owner's manual to locate the water connections. And then tighten them if necessary.

5. Check the water filter

If you trace the leak to the water filter, then any of the following may be the cause of the leak:

Yo. The water filter is damaged

Remove the filter and check if the gasket is broken or missing. If so, then the filter must be replaced.

ii. The water filter is old

When the water filter is used for longer than the recommended time, the filter begins to clog. In this case, the filter must be replaced, since cleaning it does not solve the problem. Also, be sure to replace the filter at the recommended frequency to avoid this problem.

iii. The water filter is compatible with your refrigerator

If the water filter is not compatible with your refrigerator model, it will not fit properly into the filter housing. This will cause water to spill out of the gaps between the filter and the filter housing. Replace the filter with one compatible with your refrigerator to solve this problem.

iv. The water filter was not installed correctly

If you have recently replaced your water filter, this is likely the case. Remove the water filter and reinstall it to solve this problem. You can refer to the user manual to learn how to correctly install the water filter of your Miele refrigerator.

6. Replace the water filter housing

The water filter housing may have a crack that causes water to leak out of the filter area. The water filter housing cannot be repaired if it is cracked, so it must be replaced.

How to replace the Miele refrigerator water filter housing

Do the following to replace the water filter housing on your Miele refrigerator

Step 1 : Unplug the refrigerator to ensure safety. Also, turn off the water supply, as the repair will involve spilling water.

Step 2 : Remove the water filter from the filter housing.

Step 3 : Remove the screw holding the water filter housing in place. And then gently pull the case forward.

Step 4 : Next, separate the refrigerator from the wall so that you can fully access the back of the appliance.

Step 5 : Remove the screws holding the rear access panel in place and then remove it. Locate the inlet valve and then disconnect the water lines from the valve using an open-end wrench.

Step 7 : Go back to the front of the appliance and remove the filter housing. Disconnect the water line from the old housing and connect it to the new filter housing.

Step 8 : Install the new filter housing and reassemble the refrigerator by performing the steps in reverse order.

7. Check the door seal

The door seal regulates the temperature of the refrigerator by keeping hot air out of it. But the gasket may fail to perform its function if it is dirty, leaking, or worn. Therefore, inspect the gasket for any of the above cases.

If the gasket is dirty, simply clean it with a mild detergent and a kitchen cloth. The gasket must be replaced if it leaks or is worn.

To replace the door seal, do the following:

Step 1 : Open the refrigerator door. Using a putty knife or flat-head screwdriver, remove the top corner of the door gasket.

Step 2 : Remove the door gasket from the track by grasping and pulling on the already removed top corner.

Step 3 : Place the new gasket on the track, make sure the gasket is compatible with your refrigerator.

Step 4 : Work around the track and attach the gasket firmly to the track. Inspect your work and make sure there are no bulges or folds around the joint.

8. Empty the dispenser drip tray

If the leak is coming from the water dispenser, the drip tray may be full and overflowing. In this case, simply remove the tray and empty it to stop the leak.

9. Replace the water inlet valve

The water inlet valve is located on the rear access panel of the refrigerator and is responsible for supplying water to the refrigerator. The inlet valve may become defective and become stuck. If you trace the leak to the inlet valve, this is most likely the case.

To solve this problem, the inlet valve must be replaced. But this process can be complex, so we recommend that you contact a service technician for this.

Another reason the water inlet valve may leak is if the water pressure is too low. The valve requires a minimum of 20 psi to close properly.

Use a water pressure regulator to check the water pressure.

Or you can do the following in the absence of a water pressure regulator:

  1. Turn off the water supply and then disconnect the water line from the inlet valve.
  2. Hold the water line over a bucket and turn the water supply back on.
  3. Watch the water coming out of the line. If the water flow is strong, then the water pressure is fine. If the flow is weak, then the flow is weak and too low to close the water inlet valve.

If the pressure is low, change the water line as it may be the cause of the problem.
