With the help of a little bit of luck and some solid defending Peterborough United finally bagged their first clean sheet of the season and ended
Nicolas Batum Jersey a run of five games without a win. This was far from an easy game though, despite being bottom of the table Coventry were fighting right from the start and will be cursing their luck after a blatant penalty decision went against them. This was a game that Posh had to win. Coventry were rock bottom of the Championship and without a win since October. Following the injury to Grant McCann last weekend Ryan Tunnicliffe was brought into the starting line-up. Daniel Kearns was handed his first start of the season replacing Paul Taylor meaning it was Lee Tomlin who partnered Emile Sinclair up front.First halves at London Road are never normally that entertaining but this one was quite dire. Right from the off it was Coventry who had the better chances in the game although they produced nothing to worry
Jay Scrubb Jersey Joe Lewis. Lee Tomlin had the first chance for Posh but his attempt from a free-kick flew over the cro sbar. On 25 minutes Lewis was forced to make the first save of the game parrying away a Gary Gardener free-kick. The only other real chance of the half again came from Tomlin on 35 minutes as he rounded two defenders but then saw his fierce shot fly over the cro sbar.Posh fans were slightly disgruntled going into the break as Coventry were throwing every man behind the ball making it almost impo sible to break
Quentin Richardson Jersey through, it would take a spark of magic to break the deadlock.Four minutes after the break Paul Taylor replaced Lee Frecklington and immediately made an impact playing a perfect pa s into Kearns but his shot was blocked. Boyd then fired over after again some great build-up play from Taylor. Similar to last week Posh then lost the services of Lee Tomlin on the hour through injury who was replaced by Tom Kennedy.Moments later the controversial moment of the game came. Craig Alcock obviously handled the ball in the penalty area but the referee disagreed and waved away all Coventry appeals. The score-line was finally broken on 66 minutes once again thanks to Taylor who powered into the area
Mfiondu Kabengele Jersey only to see his shot deflected. Taylor then selfle sly played the deflection to Sinclair who calmly fired home high into the goal.Sinclair could have made it two on 73 minutes after Coventry made a rooky mistake and pa sed acro s the area in which Sinclair intercepted but was denied by Murphy who rushed from his line.Despite this Coventry were still in the game and would find themselves unlucky when on 86 minutes Gardeners shot hit the bottom of the post. It was only thanks to the heroics from Gabriel Zakuani that Posh held on as he cleared a Lukas Jutkiewicz shot from his own goal-line in the final moments.Despite being a game that will quickly be forgotten this was a vital win for
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Jersey Posh who will feel proud they managed to break through the strong Coventry back-line and the clean sheet will add that extra bit of confidence going into Christmas. The win sees Posh creep back up to 15th. Up next is another must win game against Nottingham forest who currently occupy a place in the relegation zone.
