What is a Basement Apartment and Should I Consider It for My Next Home? from Richard Kart's blog

There are a lot of different types of apartments that you can choose to go with when it is time to find your next home. You may want to focus on the location or the amenities, but often price is going to be a big factor to help you consider what you would like to find and whether you will move into one apartment or another. You can love an apartment a ton, but if you find that it is more expensive than what you can afford, you will not be able to move in. When your budget is smaller, you may worry about finding a good place that has the right amount of space and will work with your income.

One option that you can look into if you want or need more space, such as for a big family, you will want to take a look at a basement apartment. This is going to be found in the basement of any apartment or home that you choose to rent. It is often less desirable than you will find with some of the other units, but that is why you can get more space for less money. If you can handle less light and a bit more noise than other parts of the property, then this can be a good place to call home.

A basement apartment is going to be any type that is located below street level. Above this type of apartment, there will typically be more apartments, or there ca be another house or a business. But this one is at least partly underground, though some can be completely underground.

Basement apartments can technically be found in any location that you would like, but they are most common in some of the bigger cities. You may also find that private homeowners will convert a basement that they don’t use into an apartment so that they can make some rental income or have help with the mortgage for space that is just sitting empty all the time.

When it is time to find an apartment that will work for you and for the whole family, then you need to make sure that you pick out one that has all the space and amenities you desire.
