So, what is an Elastomeric Layer?

In the early days of synthetic turf, it wasn't uncommon to install the thin nylon based carpet that was artificial turf directly on top of asphalt. We have come a long way as an industry. With each generation of turf, more and more research is done to prioritize the players safety . The E-layer is no exception.

A rubber E-layer system underneath the turf will significantly improve your fields shock attenuation. It not only ensures a consistent, safer playing field but it improves the overall aesthetic of your field.

From the Synthetic Turf Council :

An Elastic layer (E-layer) is a mechanically paved pad and must be installed by a specialty contractor. It's completely permeable and is typically comprised of rubber granulate and polyurethane binder. E-layers can vary in thickness and do not have seams typical of other resilient underlayments. These pads are more expensive than rubber, foam or panel shock attenuation systems however, budget allowing, they offer the most consistent surface planarity as well as the most permanent base available for safe g-max levels over the life cycle of multiple surfaces.

When building a field on which you plan to play contact sports, it's always a good idea to consider installing an E-layer. But what happens if it's not in your budget? What about the ever important drainage of you field? How will it effect the appearance? Below we have compiled some FAQs and answers.

Drainage

An E-layer by Carter will always be completely permeable. It will have no effect on the drainage underneath. We take pride in getting your drainage just right, so that you can play QUICKLY after weather events. See what the great Mike Leach had to say about Carter's drainage when we built the field at Jones Stadium in Lubbock, TX for him.

Planarity

A pour in place E-layer system will have a better planar appearance than other unlayments that are not poured in place on site.

G-Max & Safety

The safety of the athletes playing on our fields is always our top priority. We know that ASTM G-Max standards are subject to change as more and more research is done.  This important research helps ensure the safety of the players. It also means that over the course of your turfs lifecycle the safety requirements may change. When Carter installs an E-Layer system underneath your turf, we can help to ensure you meet the ever evolving safety requirements.

My budget doesn't allow for an E-Layer. What does this mean for me?

When Carter builds your field, we guarantee that it is built to meet all current G-Max requirements. E-layer or not, a turf field by Carter Construction will be beautiful in appearance and have your athletes safety top of mind.
