Celebrating
Ageing: How Reliant is Redefining Care and Representation for Older Australians
The Australian Human Rights Commission’s recent report, "Shaping
Perceptions: How Australian Media Reports on Ageing" (October 2024), shines
a spotlight on how older people are portrayed in media. It highlights
persistent stereotypes and underrepresentation, which can foster ageism and
prevent us from fully appreciating the value older Australians bring to our
communities.
At Reliant, this issue hits close to home because we know just how
extraordinary older people are. Every day, we see their resilience, wisdom, and
joy, and we’re passionate about challenging the narrative that ageing is
something to be feared. Instead, we believe it’s something to be celebrated.
Key Insights from the Report
Breaking Stereotypes: The report shows that ageing is often framed as
a problem in media, emphasising decline rather than possibility. At Reliant, we
see this differently—ageing is an opportunity to thrive, connect, and
contribute.
Valuing Representation: Older Australians are too often invisible in
public conversations. For us, every client is at the heart of what we do. We
listen to their stories, respect their individuality, and ensure their voices
are heard in their care.
Empowering Older Women: Gendered ageism is a reality, but at Reliant,
we celebrate everyone equally. We know our clients are more than their
appearances—they are adventurers, nurturers, leaders, and friends.
How Reliant Leads the Way
We don't just care for our clients; we genuinely value and celebrate
them. Here’s how Reliant is making a difference:
Empowering Independence: We partner with our clients to help them live
the life they choose, surrounded by the people and activities they love.
Honouring Individuality: No two people are the same, and neither are
their needs. Our care plans are designed with respect and flexibility to meet
each client's unique goals.
Promoting Positive Representation: Whether through our communication,
our team’s training, or our client-first culture, we’re always advocating for
respect, dignity, and appreciation for older Australians.
This report reminds us how much more we can all do to shape
perceptions of ageing positively. At Reliant, we’re proud to be part of that
change, creating a future where older people feel valued, seen, and celebrated
for all they are.
