Every athlete wants to look and feel young. It is no wonder that a famous musician once sang, “I want to be forever young…" and got a considerable following- people resonated with those lyrics. When years go by, or we stay without being active, however, we lose youthful abilities and develop complications that make it difficult to perform certain athletic functions like running or even jumping effortlessly.


You may think these complications begin when one gets to 80, but that is not always the case. Nowadays, athletes can start losing youth speed and agilityat a much younger age. First off, though, what are speed and agility? Speed is the ability to increase velocity. When something or someone does an activity fast, we say that person or that thing goes at high speed. Agility is the ability to change direction rapidly without losing speed, coordination, balance, strength, or body control. Almost all sports require the athlete to rush against time and sometimes an opponent. So now you understand why it is vital for every athlete to have speed and agility to perform to their best ability. 

                       

·         How do you gain or increase speed and agility?

As discussed earlier, anyone can lose speed and agility with age or inactivity. However, there is a way we can (re)gain and increase speed and agility.  

A certified trainer will first evaluate or diagnose you before starting a training g program. This enables them to customize the program to suit your needs. Your trainer may subject you to several drills that will help you improve your agility. 


You will perform these drills after doing a warm-up. Some of these drills may include; Lateral Running/ Side-to-Side Drills, dot drills, and Jump Box Drills, among others. For speed, lunges, side throws, and reactive crossovers can help.
