Though Air Jordan wasn’t officially put on sale until April 1 in six target markets, including Chicago, the company already has shipped 1.5 million pairs.National distribution of the adult Air Jordan shoe is set for July 1, to be followed shortly by a Children’s Air Jordan and even a Baby Air Jordan line for infants 3 months to 2 years old, the latter scheduled on the market sometime this fall.

Dave Luhr, an account supervisor on the Nike account at Chiat/Day agency in Los Angeles, raved about the success of the Jordan shoe at an Institute of Outdoor Advertising seminar at the Hyatt Regency-Reunion here Monday.
''It has been a great story in Chicago, and that we expected it to be, because of his basketball prominence in that city,'' Luhr said. ''But Air Jordan has done extremely well in other markets as well, including New York and Los Angeles.The client and agency credit Jordan’s personality, his showmanship with all the ''hang time'' (thus the name Air Jordan) and his exceptional rookie year in helping to boost sales.
Chiat/Day also has done some advertising on behalf of Air Jordan, but there are no promotional plans scheduled for a sports apparel line named after the Bulls star slated for introduction shortly.
There is a waiting list for the high-quality Jordan basketball shoes (the adult size sells for $65) at many retailers.
As for Jordan, he reportedly is being paid $2.5 million by Nike as part of a five-year contract for his name’s appearing on the shoes and clothing. Jordan also will pick up a percentage of sales as part of his Nike deal, so you can see he is smiling all the way to Chicago Stadium — and the bank.
