RuneScape players account were stolen through scam websites that tricked innocent players into RuneScape Gold providing their login credentials. Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard said, "Account theft and the use of fraudulent websites is a major issue for all online games industries and Jagex has a dedicated team to tackle any illegal activity within our games."
"Wherever there's evidence that suggests someone has committed crime that is evident in the case of any phishing or hacking Jagex is in close contact with law enforcement agencies around the world to bring them to justice.
Gerhard added, "Our first and foremost concern is protecting the community of players due to the high value that players place upon their unique accounts." The theft of RuneScape accounts shouldn't be treated any differently from the theft of other important possessions like a television or car. Players invest a lot of time in developing their characters.
Our internal investigation has found that just a handful of individuals were responsible for more than 95% of accounts hijacking in RuneScape. We have zero tolerance for those who try to compromise the integrity of this lively community. The dedicated and skilled individuals at the FBI and PCeU, who have assisted us in similar activities in the USA, are my sincerest gratitude."
A PCeU spokesperson stated that a man aged 23 was detained in Somerset by officers of the police on Tues 24th November. This arrest came after the allegation that some RuneScape accounts had been hacked, and the man was misappropriated. Following the discovery of Buy RuneScape Gold the compromise, PCeU detectives worked closely with JAGEX and, through this collaboration, the evidence needed was gathered to ensure an earlier arrest could be made.
