The paper for ATM transaction printing is treated with a transparent dye that turns black when exposed to a certain temperature. A heat-generating print head inside the ATM essentially burns the transaction information onto the thermal paper without ink cartridges or ribbons. The top layer of the paper has a protective coating to keep the information from fading or washing away from the elements easily. Many paper rolls are produced without the addition of BPA, which is an industrial chemical that is considered detrimental to human health.
