The MMO is set in a fantasy realm called Aeternum. Players start shipwrecked on the island and are forced to fight and craft their way towards progress. This includes not just the notion of settlers conquering a vast wilderness with hostile forces, but similar weapons and clothing styles, even the helmets worn by Spanish conquistadors. Amazon has been careful to play up fantasy aspects – just the premise and name of the game, however, have sometimes been criticized as a reminder of the millions of native people who were killed or enslaved under powers like Spain, France, Portugal, and England. Blood Elves are the only Horde race in the Burning Crusade that can be the previously Alliance-exclusive paladin class, while Draenei is the only Alliance race which can be the previously Horde-exclusive shaman class. That means more than a few players will be rerolling to play these new classes.
Blizzard said during the initial announcement of Burning Crusade Classic that the game's pre-patch would allow players an opportunity to level new Blood Elf and Draenei characters ahead of the expansion's launch. Given Blizzard's pre-patch history, most players assumed this would mean a pre-patch lasting about four weeks.
Instead, when Blizzard announced the game's release date, it also said the pre-patch would be launching on May 18, only giving players a little over two weeks to make preparations and level their new characters. While the time it takes to level in the Burning Crusade pre-patch is reduced from WoW Classic thanks to reduced experience requirements and more experience from quests, it's still a significant time investment that will take most players dozens of hours, and now players have even less time than they expected to accomplish the task or risk starting the new expansion significantly behind.
More than a few players on the game's subreddit have expressed disappointment with the shorter-than-usual pre-patch, as many didn't have time to plan their work schedules around the patch launch or simply wanted more time to play their new characters at level 60 before the release of the Burning Crusade. As the user Periodiko points out in the game's subreddit in an upvoted comment on the topic of pre-patch length, while Blizzard never officially said how long the pre-patch would be prior to their announcement, "The explicit intention of allowing people to level [Blood Elves] and Draenei was to allow them to level to 60 in preparation for TBC. The expectation is there will be a reasonable time frame to do that in...it just seemed tremendously unlikely we'd only get two weeks because that would be a pretty bad way to do it."

She can also be seen in the announcement trailer for WoW Classic, where she boldly states "someone once said you can't go home again, but they lacked vision--and a temporal discombobulator." WoW players are currently in wait mode, as players of Shadowlands are still awaiting the expansion's first major content patch, Chains of Domination, while WoW Classic players get ready to step through the Dark Portal with the arrival of The Burning Crusade Classic on June 1.

The launch of Burning Crusade Classic follows a shortened pre-patch period where players were able to level new race and class combinations like Blood Elf paladins and Draenei shamans, while also experimenting with new abilities and talents across each of the game's nine classes. Players also had to choose whether to move on to the Burning Crusade, or keep their character in what Blizzard is now calling "Classic Era" servers.
Burning Crusade was WoW's first expansion, and brought with it a number of huge changes to the game, including a new world to explore, the introduction of flying mounts, and the popular Arena PvP mode. But the Burning Crusade Classic won't be an exact replica of the game that first launched in 2007.
For starters, the game now sports a paid level 58 character boost, implemented with the intention of being an option for players who didn't play WoW Classic but want to participate in The Burning Crusade, along with a digital deluxe edition which includes a mount not seen in the original game.
Endgame content like raids will be rolled out in phases, with only a few available at launch. That's a big change from original Burning Crusade, where most of the game's content was technically available from the get-go, albeit locked behind a lengthy and complicated attunement process. Changes have been made to the game's arena rating and matchmaking systems to be more modern, and while the game will be running on the last version of The Burning Crusade, Blizzard has made it clear it doesn't want the game to be quite the cakewalk Classic turned out to be. As a result, players will have to contend with pre-nerf versions of many raid bosses, at least initially, while other tweaks and adjustments have been made to certain items and professions to ensure that, in an age of in-depth guides and datamining, the more than 15 year old content isn't a complete pushover for modern players.
As for what comes next after The Burning Crusade Classic, Blizzard isn't saying. In a recent IGN interview, WoW game director Ion Hazzikostas said nothing was set in stone, but that Blizzard was dedicated to the WoW Classic community for the long term.
"It truly will reflect what we hear from that community, what they're looking to do, how they see the journey ahead of them unfolding," Hazzikostas said. "And we have a few options that we can consider, but first things first, let's get them into Outland. Let's make sure that experience is smooth and everything is as it should be for them. And then we'll figure out where we go from there."
