A couple of years ago, many expected 2016 to be something of a breakthrough time for electric bikes. Of the other manufacturers, BMW has shown plenty of interest in electric bikes and currently offers its C Evolution electric scooter. However, given its very high price (it’s on a par with the S1000RR in most markets) it’s not surprising that sales have been fairly slow. KTM, another pioneer with its Freeride E models, has also suffered slow sales due to high prices; some dealers in the UK still have 2015-spec Freeride E-SX models in stock with prices slashed to little more than half their original tag.
Meanwhile, other electric start-ups that looked promising initially have also struggled. Mission Motors, which made an impressive electric superbike prototype, closed its doors in 2015. Lightning, which set speed records at 350km/h with its prototype and won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb outright in 2013, officially offers the LS-218 superbike for sale. And for those that don’t care about the environmental impact, it also requires pretty much zero maintenance and doesn’t spill oil all over your garage or barn. Plus, as its electric motor enables powerful low-end torque at the push of a button, it’s easier than traditional bicycles to operate.
The company opened multiple manufacturing facilities in the state of Texas and is currently in the works on developing multiple four-wheeled UTVs and a smaller electric motorcycle known as Runt.Volcon IPO earlier this year and the stock climbed rapidly before entering into a more volatile pattern which is not uncommon for new listings. especially for new listings across the market.
A startup called ALYI has been sending out a large number of announcements to press in recent years regarding their upcoming electric motorcycles. Every time someone sneezes at this company, I get an announcement.
When Kawasaki announced that it would reveal three electric motorcycles next year, the motorcycle industry must have really taken notice. Certainly, this was one of the first campaigns to get so much attention (and there have been plenty of e-moto promises over the years).
One of the most exciting parts about this launch might have been because Kawasaki hasn’t launched an electric motorcycle yet.
Sure, it has that prototype that’s been around for years. But the company hasn’t seemed very excited about sharing updates about the product. Indeed big things are coming soon and perhaps the company didn’t want to ruin the surprise by announcing all of this when it could still be kept under wraps.
