For dogs, 0.0015-0.003mg per pound or 0.003 to 0.006mg/kg of the medication is advised once a month for heartworm medication. 0.15mg per pound or 0.3mg/kg is advised once in 14 days for skin infections and 0.1mg/pound or 0.2mg/kg is advised for gastrointestinal parasites.

Some breeds of dogs, including Collies, Australian Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Old English Sheepdogs, and English Sheepdogs, may genetic mutation that makes them dangerously over sensitive to ivermectin,This sensitivity is because of a mutation in what is known as the MDR1 gene. In dogs who have the mutation, the drug crosses the blood-brain barrier and causes neurological damage, which can be lethal.
