Willie O'Ree broke the NHL's color barrier on January 18, 1958 when he suited up for the in a game against the . Sixty years later, O'Ree has been the subject of numerous tributes and honors for the courage Adam Cracknell Jersey it took to be the 's first black player. But yet, somehow, he's still not in the Hockey Hall of Fame.On Wednesday night in Boston, the Bruins once again honored O'Ree before they got set to take on the Canadiens, inviting him out to the ice to drop the ceremonial face-off. Both Boston and Montreal players wore special patches on their jerseys commemorating the 60th anniversary of O'Ree's NHL debut, and that same logo was displayed on the TD Garden ice behind both nets. Here's to 60 years, Willie O'Ree! Thank you for everything you've done for the game. NHL (@NHL) Prior to the game, Boston mayor Marty Walsh held a pre s conference at the arena. Walsh announced that January 18th would be known as "Willie O'Ree Day" and, as part of the celebration, the city was dedicating a new street hockey rink in O'Ree's name. While all these honors and tributes are more than well-deserved for O'Ree, they also serve as a reminder that the 82-year-old still hasn't been celebrated with hockey's ultimate honor, one that he also more than deserves: An induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. O'Ree's stats certainly aren't impre sive enough to Adam Graves Men Jersey get him into the HOF on their own. The former Bruins forward only played a total of 45 career games at the NHL level, scoring just four goals and 14 points. Not exactly numbers that jump off the page, even if you consider that O'Ree was almost fully blind in one eye as a result of a hockey-related injury suffered prior to his NHL debut. However, the Hall of Fame in Toronto inducts members under multiple categories -- including players and builders. The "builders" category highlights various members of the hockey community who have helped to build and grow the game, from coaches to general managers and executives to broadcasters and others.O'Ree was a player, but he also was -- and still is -- a builder. On top of tearing down the sport's color barrier and enduring the challenges that came with it, O'Ree has also served as the NHL's Diversity Amba sador for the past two decades. The league has enlisted him to Mike Richter Kids Jersey spread a me sage that they've so often preached as a brand in recent years: "Hockey is for everyone." "Willie's speed, his skill, and his sheer perseverance earned him a job in what was then the six-team National Hockey League, and obviously jobs as a player in those days were scarce," . "We celebrate not only the NHL games he played but the countle s thousands of boys and girls he has inspired since becoming our 'Hockey is for Everyone' amba sador in 1998."While the NHL still remains the least diverse of the four major American sports -- recent statistics show over 90-percent of the league's players identify as white -- the number of black players (and black fans) acro s the league seems to be picking up. Many of those players will be quick to tell you that O'Ree played a role in helping them get to where they are, whether it be directly or indirectly.Prior to the 2016 Stanley Cup Final, forward , one of the NHL's most prominent black players, praised O'Ree for blazing the trail and serving as a mentor for him. His admiration towards O'Ree is so strong that he suggested the league should retire his No. 22 jersey league-wide, much like Major League Baseball did for Jackie Robinson's No. 42. "It's a no-brainer," said Ward. "Without Willie, it would be tough for me to be sitting here today. I definitely think Willie should be a big part of this."During a visit to Philadelphia in 2015, forward sought out O'Ree to voice his appreciation for helping set the table for future generations of black players. After the meeting, Simmonds told reporters Kevin Shattenkirk Jersey , "If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be playing the game today."It's obvious that O'Ree's contributions to the sport extend far, far beyond stats on a page and will continue to be felt for generations to come, so why hasn't he been enshrined yet? It's a question that deserves answers. To put things in perspective, Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs was elected to the Hall of Fame in the builders category last year. Jacobs was praised by Bettman for being a close advisor and helping to drive the league Mike Richter Women Jersey 's busine s model. But, to many others, Jacobs is the money-hawking voice in the commi sioner's ear who helped create three separate work stoppages since 1994.You're telling me that a suit who has been at the forefront of three lockouts in two decades has done more to build the game and is more deserving of a spot in the HOF than the guy who has been the most prominent amba sador of inclusivity and diversity in that same timeframe? To put it simply, that's an absolute joke.O'Ree has said in the past that he hopes one day he'll make it into the Hall, and maybe eventually that day will come. But he's 82 years old, and it sure would be nice if he was around to enjoy it.
A night after the and carried momentum from the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs into Game 1 victories, perhaps the most intriguing series of the second round got off to rousing -- but very different -- starts. After knocking off the defending Stanley Cup champion , the visited the in a matchup of unlikely contenders to start the night, and after three periods of superb goaltending, the Canes pulled off yet another overtime victory. The and , meanwhile, traded goals for much of their first 40 minutes on ice before Joe Thornton, Brent Burns and the Sharks' big names took over. Not only was the goalie perfect vs. the Islanders all night, but he's now up to two shutouts this postseason and more than 120 straight minutes of shutout ice time. Twisting the knife, hes off to a fantastic start with the Islanders and was a contributor to the Bruins defeat Thursday night.Chara going down was unexpected, but this goes to show just how important cap management is. The Bruins were killed by bonus overages from last season, that forced them to move out Boychuk. Now two defensemen go down in the first month and there arent going to be a lot of teams willing to help them on the trade market as the Bruins appear to be light on movable a sets. That could force Chiarelli to go to the free agent scrap heap, which features familiar faces like Tomas Kaberle and Hal Gill or others still floating around like Douglas Murray and Mike Komisarek. One of the most anticipated series of the postseason was the one between the and . Game 1 did not disappoint and it was the kind of game that is going to make hockey fans (perhaps not of the teams involved) hope this series goes the distance. The Sharks ended up picking up a huge 4-3 win on the road against the rival Kings in what was the most thrilling game of the early goings of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The two bitter rivals played it tight with multiple lead changes, plenty of great saves, crazy goals and even a little controversy. It was an exhilerating display of what Graeme Clarke Women Jersey the playoffs are all about and set the stage for what should be a series that lives up to the hype.So lets recap some of the craziest moments of this incredible game:1. The teams traded goals in le s than a minute twiceThere were four lead changes in this game. Until scored the eventual game-winner 17 seconds into the third period, the longest lead of the night lasted 3:32. On two separate occasions, one team took the lead only to lose it le s than a minute later. First, it was giving San Jose its first lead of the game 6:50 into the second period, scoring off of a deflection in front of .2-1 Sharks (fixed) Stephanie (@myregularface) That lasted only 40 seconds before scored on a deflection off of Burns to make it 2-2 (see this wacky goal at No. 2).Not quite 10 minutes later, put the Kings back on top with an awesome toe-drag, shooting-while-falling snipe of a goal that made it 3-2.Backhand toe drag. Falling top corner Brian Gibbons Kids Jersey snipe. Great celebration. What a play. #StanleyCup Playoffs (@NHL) Thats the kind of thing that can be a little deflating, right? Nah. came right back down 30 seconds later and scored what probably should have been his second of the game (see No. 3) to tie the score again. Hertl goal Stephanie (@myregularface) 2. The Kings first two goals bounced in off of Sharks players opened the scoring early when he showed incredible patience by skating around a sprawled-out and not firing the puck from a bad angle. Instead, he tried to center a pa s towards a waiting on the back door. It was still a bad angle, but the puck caught a deflection off of Hertl and went in.Muzzin goal Stephanie (@myregularface) In the second period, while trailing 2-1, Carter tried to force a centering pa s through two Sharks defensemen to . The puck never had a chance to make it through. Instead, it bounced off the stick of a diving Burns, deflected into the air and then off of Jones back and in to make it 2-2.Carter ties is 2-2 Stephanie (@myregularface) Sometimes those are the bounces you need to have, but it also shows the value of throwing a puck towards the net. Anything can happen in front.3. Ref robs Sharks of goal with errant whistle, admits mistakeThis game could have been a lot Blake Coleman Kids Jersey differenct had the referee not blown his whistle to kill a play just before Hertl put a shot past Jonathan Quick for the goal that should have made it 3-2 at that point.First off, there was a delayed penalty on the play. Then there was a scramble in front of the Kings net, where a puck actually hit a Kings player, but Los Angeles never had po se sion. Yet the whistle blew. The referee then signaled that a Sharks player had knocked the puck down with a high-stick. Only there wasnt one. It wasnt even close. After the play, Sportsnets Mike Johnson overheard referee Kevin Pollock telling the Sharks bench that they mi sed the call. Contrary to popular belief, referees will admit when they me sed up. Perhaps there was a sigh of relief from the refs after the Sharks won, knowing that this goal wasnt going to be as big a part of the story of this game, but it was one of our crazy moments.4. Kings defenseman makes the save of the nightThe Los Angeles Kings boast one of the best postseason goalies of his generation, but Quick needed his defenseman to bail him out. Lucky for him, Drew Doughty was there to lend a helping hand. Not long after the Sharks had that goal disallowed, they had another golden opportunity. Quick made a terrific pad save on Pavelski, but the rebound popped out in front. Quick had no chance to recover. That's where Doughty comes in. The puck came right to Patrick Marleau, who put a shot on net, but Doughty laid out acro s the goal line to rob him. Quick made a lot of big saves over the course of the game, but this was a great heads up play by Doughty who wouldn't look as good on the Sharks goal at No. 5. :5. Joe Pavelski scores winner on unconventional wraparoundSharks captain Joe Pavelski was one of the best players on the ice all night. He scored the Sharks first goal that tied the game early in the second period. He also scored their last after basically going into beast mode to start Scott Stevens Women Jersey the third period. The Sharks had a faceoff in the offensive zone. Pavelski won it cleanly back to defenseman . All the Sharks blueliner could do was send the puck deep. Once again, Pavelski was there. However, so was Anze Kopitar, one of the best defensive forwards in the entire .Pavelski got body position, slipped around Kopitar and then went for the wraparound. However, instead of trying to tuck the puck inside the far post, Pavelski popped out to the slot. Quick had anticipated the wrap to the post and was there to protect it, but it left the far side open. Pavelski whipped a shot on the ice that went off the far post and in.Power wrap.
